Why Are Dental Implants Advantageous Over Bridges for Missing Teeth?

Posted by : Dental Smiles of Willow Glen on October 4, 2018

If you have a missing tooth or missing teeth, you are probably wondering what dental procedure you should undergo in order to fix the gap in your smile. Your dentist will give you multiple options to choose from, and one of the most common options is a cosmetic implant. However, another option your dentist might give you is a dental bridge. It’s important to know the difference between these two options and why an implant might be advantageous over a bridge.

What Is the Difference Between a Dental Bridge and Dental Implant?

A dental bridge “bridges” the gap that is made by missing teeth, and it is supported by natural teeth or other implants. A bridge is made up of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of your gap and a false tooth/teeth in between. These false teeth can be created from gold, porcelain, alloys, or any combination of these materials.

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root (usually made from titanium) that is placed and anchored where a missing tooth was originally. The installation process can take up to six months to complete, but in the end, you will have a durable and long-lasting prosthetic.

Why Could Implants Be a Better Choice for Me?

Implants might be more beneficial than a bridge because:

  • Bridges do not replace a tooth root, whereas implants do
  • Bridges are more invasive because they require the permanent alteration of teeth in order to support the bridge
  • Bridge eligibility will be based on the health of surrounding teeth, so if you suffer from periodontal disease, tooth decay, or have other cracks or chips, you might have to go through additional treatments and surgeries to support your bridge
  • Bridges do not last as long as implants. Bridges can last between 10 and 20 years, and implants can last up to 40 years if cared for properly.
