Snoring / Sleep ApneaSan Jose, CA
What causes snoring?
Snoring is caused by a narrowing of the upper airway during sleep. This can be due to large tonsils, a long uvula or excessive flabby tissue in the throat. All of the these areas relax during sleep
However, the most common cause of narrowing of the upper airway is a tongue muscle that becomes too relaxed during sleep. When relaxed, the muscle is sucked into the black of the throat with each breath taken
Snoring occurs when air travels faster through a narrow tube than through a broad one. The rapidly moving air causes the relaxed soft tissues of the throat (tonsils, soft palate, uvula or excessive flabby tissue) to vibrate. It is this vibration that creates the sound of snoring.
Sleep Apnea
If you snore heavily, wake up several times a night or feel exhausted during the day, you may have a potentially serious condition known as sleep apnea. This condition, in which the normal breathing process is frequently interrupted or obstructed while sleeping, can contribute to many health complications including hypertension, stroke, heart failure, diabetes, depression, decreased sex drive, memory lapses, and being tired. These conditions can significantly damage your health and possibly even cause life-shortening ailments. While treatments range from weight loss, CPAP machines, and to surgery, many patients just need a little help keeping their airway open during sleep. Dental Smiles of Willow Glen offers AveoTSD and the TAP 3 Elite removable anti-snoring devices as possible alternative and inexpensive solutions.
There are actually two primary types of sleep apnea, central (CSA) and obstructive (OSA). The central variety occurs when the brain simply stops sending signals to the body to breathe normally, while the obstructive variety involves a physical stoppage of air flow through the mouth and throat into the lungs. OSA is much more common than CSA. When the back of the throat closes off, the brain senses a drop in oxygen and awakes the body enough for breathing to resume. People with obstructive sleep apnea may experience these interruptions hundreds of times in a single night, even if they do not wake up sufficiently to realize it.

How the AveoTSD Works
In this MRI images, the tongue falls into the back of the airway as the person sleeps. This blocks the airway, leading to snoring.
The MRI image shows the AveoTSD holding the tongue gently forward, preventing it from falling back and obstructing the airway. Note how the airway is now open and clear. This stops or greatly reduces snoring.
TAP 3 Elite – A Dental Alternative
The TAP 3 Elite is a custom-molded device consisting of two trays, one for the upper teeth and one for the lower teeth. A hook connecting the two trays ensures that the lower jaw is held slightly forward, which helps the back of the throat remain open for normal breathing. Dr. Madaan can adjust the degree of jaw adjustment by selecting one of three different hook sizes and then fine-tuning the alignment for a perfect fit.
Once patients become used to wearing the TAP 3 Elite, they find that they are much more likely to enjoy a refreshing night’s sleep. Since the device also helps prevent the loud, pervasive snoring that so often accompanies sleep apnea, the other occupants of the home may also enjoy fewer interruptions to their own sleep.
We encourage anyone suffering from the issues of loud snoring or sleep apnea to schedule a consultation with Dental Smiles of Willow Glen. We can evaluate your oral cavity and determine whether the AveoTSD or TAP 3 Elite mouthguard makes sense as a treatment strategy for you.
