What causes snoring?
Snoring is caused by a narrowing of the upper airway during sleep. This can be due to large tonsils, a long uvula or excessive flabby tissue in the throat. All of the these areas relax during sleep
However, the most common cause of narrowing of the upper airway is a tongue muscle that becomes too relaxed during sleep. When relaxed, the muscle is sucked into the black of the throat with each breath taken
Snoring occurs when air travels faster through a narrow tube than through a broad one. The rapidly moving air causes the relaxed soft tissues of the throat (tonsils, soft palate, uvula or excessive flabby tissue) to vibrate. It is this vibration that creates the sound of snoring.

There are actually two primary types of sleep apnea, central (CSA) and obstructive (OSA). The central variety occurs when the brain simply stops sending signals to the body to breathe normally, while the obstructive variety involves a physical stoppage of air flow through the mouth and throat into the lungs. OSA is much more common than CSA. When the back of the throat closes off, the brain senses a drop in oxygen and awakes the body enough for breathing to resume. How the AveoTSD Works
In this MRI images, the tongue falls into the back of the airway as the person sleeps. This blocks the airway, leading to snoring.
The MRI image shows the AveoTSD holding the tongue gently forward, preventing it from falling back and obstructing the airway. Note how the airway is now open and clear. This stops or greatly reduces snoring.
TAP 3 Elite – A Dental Alternative
The TAP 3 Elite is a custom-molded device consisting of two trays, one for the upper teeth and one for the lower teeth. A hook connecting the two trays ensures that the lower jaw is held slightly forward, which helps the back of the throat remain open for normal breathing. Dr. Lim can adjust the degree of jaw adjustment by selecting one of three different hook sizes and then fine-tuning the alignment for a perfect fit.
